Getting Stranded

True confession -- island living has always fascinated me.

Maybe because the murder-mystery writer snuggled deep inside loves toying with the idea of being stranded. Think of all the fun adventures (i.e. lurking dangers) just waiting to happen! I grew up with gothic novels and arm-chair detective stories. Agatha Christie had the right idea in And Then There Were None.

Snowstorms that force major shutdowns are fun, too. And great mechanisms for forcing two characters to confront whatever you need them to, whether past/present/future.

So imagine how excited I was to visit Peak's Island off the coast of Portland, Maine. (And my secret disappointment to NOT miss the last ferry off the island....)

My writer-brain buzzed with story setups and misadventures for my poor unsuspecting characters. Of course, being a non-suspense romance writer (at least for the time being), finding a dead body under the pier probably isn't going to happen. But don't be surprised if someday down the line two hapless souls from Maple Grove find themselves on some island off the coast, after tourist season has ended, and things don't go exactly as planned.

Just saying.
